
Getting Rid of Cold Spots in Large-Scale Glass Kilns
If you’re preheating oversized glass sheets, you know the nightmare of “cold spots.” It usually happens right where one lamp ends and the next begins. Those tiny drops in temperature might seem insignificant, but they lead to uneven tempering. And uneven tempering leads to shattered glass. Not a great look. To fix this, we build continuous infrared heating units that stretch past 2 meters. The struggle with length and power You can’t just stretch a filament and call it a day. When a tube gets that long, the internal resistance shifts. We spend a lot of time tweaking the voltage and wattage so the heat stays exactly the same from the first millimeter to the 2,000th. But here’s the catch: if you want to hit those tempering temperatures fast, you’re pulling a massive amount of power. You can’t just plug these into a standard circuit and hope for the best. Your electrical panels need to be beefy enough to handle that surge, or you’re going to have some very expensive problems. Fighting gravity When a quartz tube gets hot and long, it wants to sag. If the lamp dips, the gap between the heat source and the glass changes. That ruins your thermal gradient instantly. To stop that, we use heavy-wall quartz. It stays rigid. We also overlap the heat zones and use specific connectors to make sure the heat flows in one smooth line, rather than a series of choppy blocks. The real-world trade-offs There’s a huge plus here: fewer electrical connections. Fewer joints mean fewer things to break, which means less time spent troubleshooting. But, you have to be careful. A 2-meter quartz tube is a lot more fragile than a short 500mm one. It doesn’t like being bumped or shaken. If your kiln brackets aren’t dampened to kill the vibration, you’re asking for trouble. Plus, there’s the risk. If one tube in a continuous array pops, you’re replacing a much larger, pricier piece of gear than you would in a modular system. It’s a balance of efficiency versus risk, but for the quality of the glass, it’s usually a trade worth making.
