When you score a cold sheet of glass, the internal stress is just sitting there, waiting to cause trouble. That’s why you get those annoying chips or corner breakouts where the crack decides to wander off the line. It’s frustrating, it wastes material, and it slows everything down. The trick is to warm things up first. By using infrared (IR) preheating lamps, you get the glass surface just right before the cutter even touches it. The secret is in the heat Think of it as relaxing the glass. When those IR lamps hit the surface, they soften the material’s internal tension. It makes the glass less “angry,” so to speak. The score line comes out cleaner, the crack travels in a straight line, and your chipping rate just… drops. It’s a huge relief when you stop seeing those jagged edges. Getting the setup right If you’re building this out, go with short-wave quartz halogen lamps. Don’t bother with long-wave options; they’re too slow. You need that energy to punch deep into the glass quickly, especially when the sheets are flying by on a conveyor. The real art here is the balance. You’re looking for a “sweet spot” with your wattage and lamp distance. If you crank it too high, you’ll shock the glass and crack the whole sheet. Too low? You’re right back to square one with the chipping. It takes a bit of tweaking, but once you hit that zone, it’s smooth sailing. The messy reality of the shop floor Here is the part the brochures don’t tell you: these lamps live in a brutal environment. Between the glass dust and the coolant spray, those quartz tubes get filthy fast. Once a layer of grime builds up, your heat output tanks. You’ve got to keep them spotless or put up some shields, otherwise, you’re just wasting electricity. And a quick heads-up on the power: these arrays pull a lot of current. Make sure your electrical panels can handle that initial surge, or you’ll be tripping breakers all morning. Also, watch those cooling fans.
