
Fixing the “Cold Edge” Problem in Wide-Format Low-E Preheating
If you’re preheating Low-E glass and your sheets are wider than 3 meters, you’ve probably noticed a frustrating pattern: the middle is hot, but the edges are lagging. It’s a common headache. Standard lamps just aren’t built for that kind of scale, and those cold spots can ruin a whole batch. That’s why we build custom continuous infrared units. No gaps. No guessing.
The struggle with 3+ meters
You can’t just “stretch” a lamp to make it longer. If you do, you run into physics problems—voltage drops and quartz tubes that can’t handle the stress. We handle this by obsessing over the linear power density. Basically, we tweak the wattage and voltage so the heat stays steady from one end to the other. One thing to keep in mind: these high-wattage units pull a lot of juice, especially during that first cold-start surge. You’ll want to make sure your electrical bus can take the hit. We balance the ohms on our end so you don’t have to worry about the heat dipping at the edges.
The nitty-gritty: Quartz and Connectors
When a tube is 3 meters long, gravity becomes an enemy. Cheap quartz sags. And when a tube sags, it gets too close to the glass. That creates a “hot spot” that can warp your annealing or, worse, crack the glass entirely. To stop that, we use heavy-wall quartz. It stays straight. It stays safe. Since Low-E coatings can be picky, we use specific coatings on our lamps to shift the emission spectrum. Instead of the heat just bouncing off the surface, it actually sinks into the coating layer. And because we know you don’t want to rebuild your entire frame every time a tube needs replacing, we stick to industrial-grade connectors like R7s or Sk15. Just swap them out and get back to work.
The trade-off
Here’s the honest part: more power means more heat. A lot of it. These wide units give you the thermal mass you need for Low-E, but they also turn your workspace into an oven if you aren’t careful. Make sure your fans and ventilation are up to the task. If you skimp on the cooling, you’re looking at fried wiring and melted connectors. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday.
