
Getting Low-E Glass Preheating Right (Even When It’s Massive)
If you’re trying to preheat wide-format Low-E glass, you already know the headache. You need a heat source that covers a huge area without leaving those annoying cold spots. Once you cross that 3-meter mark, the standard lamps you find in a catalog just aren’t going to cut it. That’s why we build custom, ultra-long infrared heating units. The Struggle with 3-Meter Spans
Here’s the thing: when you scale a heating element up to over 3 meters, physics starts fighting you. You’ve got to deal with voltage drops and thermal expansion. We don’t just stretch out a basic filament and hope for the best. We carefully map out the wattage and voltage so the heat is the same at the very end of the line as it is at the start. If that power distribution is off, you’re looking at warping glass or coatings that just won’t stick. Now, high-wattage setups get the glass up to temp fast. That’s great for your speed, but it’s a heavy lift for your power supply. Just make sure your electrical panels can handle that initial surge before you flip the switch.
Quartz and the “Snap” Factor
We house the filaments in high-purity quartz tubes. Why? Because quartz can handle the shock of heating up and cooling down quickly without cracking. For Low-E jobs, we often add specific coatings to the tubes. This makes sure the heat actually sinks into the glass instead of just warming up the air around it. But there’s a mechanical catch. A 3-meter tube is heavy, and it will sag if it’s not held up right. We use custom mounting brackets that give the quartz room to breathe—meaning it can expand and contract as it heats up. If you pin those ends too tight, the tube will snap the second it hits operating temperature. Not a great way to start the morning.
Making It Work in Your Shop
We built these units to be easy drop-in replacements for those old, clunky heating banks. We’ll even customize the connectors to match your current wiring, so you aren’t spending your whole weekend rewiring the shop. One heads-up, though. When you’re pumping out this much radiant energy, the room gets hot. Really hot. If your tunnel’s exhaust system isn’t up to the task, you might accidentally bake your surrounding machinery. Definitely double-check your airflow rates before you wire everything in.
